Every frame is crafted to order, eliminating waste and stock inventory. Even the smallest offcuts are repurposed – used as wooden swatches for practices or to heat the factory during winter.

The Vaia Collection: Frames Born from Resilience

In October 2018, the Northern Italian Alps faced an unprecedented storm with hurricane-force winds of 217 km/h, leaving 14 million trees uprooted and communities deprived of vital natural resources. FEB31st stepped in, partnering with the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) to establish a sustainable supply chain and launched the Vaia Collection – frames crafted entirely from the fallen trees.

Each Vaia frame is a testament to nature's resilience, preserving the unique wood grain, scratches, and scars as a reminder of the storm's power. Handcrafted with minimal environmental impact, these frames embody restoration, support for local communities, and a commitment to healing the wounds of nature.

The Kireka Project: Eyewear with a Purpose

Through a connection with the charity Meeting Point, FEB31st discovered an inspiring project in Kireka, a slum in Kampala, Uganda. Despite facing devastating challenges like poverty, disease, and violence, the women of Kireka have become a beacon of resilience. Using ancient techniques, they harvest bark from the Ficus Natalensis tree to create a sustainable material known as bark cloth, which can be used to craft items like bags and clothing. The tree naturally regenerates its bark every five years and can be harvested for up to 40 years, making this process both eco-friendly and sustainable.

FEB31st has partnered with this initiative to produce special-edition eyewear using this remarkable material, creating what may be the most sustainable eyewear ever made. Beyond its environmental benefits, proceeds from the project empower the women of Kireka to build schools and medical facilities, ensuring a brighter future for their children—all without cutting down a single tree.

As the saying goes in Italy, “Un piccolo taglio di capelli” – just a little haircut for the tree, leaving nature and its community stronger.

Introducing Strato Tredici: Layer 13 Reimaged

Experience the artistry of FEB31st with Strato Tredici, an innovative design concept that transforms your wooden frames into a true work of art. By laser-etching intricate cutout patterns into the outer 13th layer, hidden bursts of colour from the layer below are revealed, adding depth and vibrancy to your eyewear.
